Query: I am of Cherokee/European background and am trying to find any information on my Native American roots. My grandmother is 3/4 Cherokee. Her father is deceased and was a full-blooded Cherokee, His name was Ivy Owen Mitchel from Alabama or Arkansas. His father was a Mitchell, and his mother was Eliza Robinson. I have heard stories from my aunts and great aunts that the Robinsons were a Native family in Alabama that held a very small plantation in Alabama and held and kept runaway slaves who fled from their white masters. I know that the Robinsons were Cherokee, and were the Mitchell’s, other surnames on this family’s lineage were Cummings, Smith, and Steele. My grandmothers mother’s maiden names was Dollie Mae Blessing she is said to be of Irish/Cherokee ancestry and her father Joe Blessing, was from Alabama, and was said to be Irish, his wife was Martha brown and was said to be a Cherokee, had long dark hair, high cheekbones, brown eyes, and a medium but not dark complexion. If you can look over this and please help me with discovering the truth of my roots.

Query: Foreman – Bedwell connection, George (Foreman) Bedwell was half Cherokee Indian, his father was a Scotsman, and his mother was Cherokee. Around the early l700’s, the white men who married Indians dropped the white man’s ways and dressed as Indians did. There was also a great deal of conflict between then at this time as the white men took over the Indian’s land and pushed them onto reservations. The whites came in and killed all of Georges family, leaving George, a small boy, His mother must have hid him before she died. The white men found him and took him down the road to a kind-hearted Englishman named John Bedwell, thus George adopted the Bedwell name, this occured in either Virginia or NC, George grew up and married an Indian lady also left an orphan, They named their first born son John, after Georges adopted father, John Bedwell, the son John Bedwell moved to Bledsoe Co. TN, and married a Sarah Ogle, to this union children were l2 children, any help in locating this George Foreman -John Bedwell adoption, place family was killed, Georges parents or any information would help.

Query: I have grown up knowing I am part Indian, but not sure what percentage or what kind of Indian. I learned recently I am one eight Indian. Now I need to find out what kind. I’m fairly certain it’s Cherokee, but I’m not for sure. My grandmothers name is Doris Jewel Hume, and she married and became Doris Sanford. She came from St. Louis, Missouri. Her maiden name is Hume and her mothers maiden name was Clark. She was a full blooded Indian, from St. Louis. My grandma Sanford (who’s mother was the indian) is the only one who knows about any of this, and she is now estranged from the family, and we have no way of getting any information from her. Apparently, in those days, it was an embarassment to be Indian, so no one is really sure what kind, and how to go about proving any of it. So, if I can find help from anyone it would be greatly appreciated.
