Query: Recently, I have begun the task of trying to locate information for my mother regarding our family. She along with (2) brothers and (1) sister were abandonded as young children. One brother and a sister were placed in an orphanage in NC. She and another brother were placed in seperate foster homes in NC. My aunt told my mother that their mother, my grandmother, was Indian, I would assume that being from NC they were probably Cherokee. My aunt does not want to give any more information. All that we know is that my grandmother’s maiden name was (according to birth certificates) of my mother and one of her siblings, had two (2) different spellings. It is showing the first name as Elmira or Elmina Sandlin on one and Sanderlin on another. My grandmother’s (maiden name was Prosser). She was married to William Sandlin/Sanderlin? My mother’s foster parents were Manly and Allie Dean (Daniels maiden name) Fulcher (deceased) of NC. Both of her brothers and her sister, as well as, herself were born in NC. If anyone has information on a William Sandlin/Sanderlin or Elmira/Elmina (or something close to that spelling) (Prosser) Sandlin/Sanderlin that would be of great interest and sooooo helpful. There are also two half sisters, fathered by William Sandlin/Sanderlin, they don’t seem to know anything about my grandfather either. If you have information regarding William Sandlin I would also be interested in that as well. As I would like to trace his ancestry. If any of these names remotely sound familiar, please contact me. I have searched and searched to no avail. It is, as all of you know, who are also searching, very frustrating not know anything about your family, especially in regards to your immediate family.

Names linked to the family are Crawford Andrews, Tate, Snell, Mills, Waters. Crawford Andrews was b. abt. 1827 in northwest Arkansas to unknown parents. Possibly this is the link. Anyone searching or related to this family please contact me. My father (b.TX 1902) was contacted in early 1900’s that he might be entitled to enrollment in tribe. By this time all old-timers were gone and he had no proof and was not sure who the Indian really was. Any help will be appreciated.

Query: My grandfather’s family has always been our family’s mystery. What I’ve heard to, was that he was of Indian (Cherokee/Iroquois/Mohawk nation) background as well as maybe Irish, Scottish, French, Spanish, and Negro. All along I have been told he was everything except Negro. I have reason to believe he was as well. I still believe however, that he had Indian in his background.
We never knew his relatives at all. They were never spoken about or visited. (Although, I did hear that his brothers visited my grandparents when they were first married and they were very dark. My grandfather isn’t dark. I do also understand that he had 13 brothers and sisters; what the breakdown of siblings was, I don’t know. He had a one brother named Eugene and at least one sister. His parent’s names were either Edward and Laura (Lara) or David and Laura (Lara) or Edward David/David Edward.). So, in my searching here’s what I have learned (taken it with a “grain of salt” too.).
His name was William Mabins/Mabi(u)ns Parrish (William Mabins Parrish); born January 27, 1894 in Rougemont, NC. Lived in Baltimore, MD for a period of time and was married to “Carrie” who was from NJ; they lived in MD, and he worked for the B : O RR. They lived on Poppleton Street in Maryland -I’ve got them on the census.
William was in WW I; Ind 10/27/17 Pvt.; Pvt. 1class 12/14/17; corp 1/24/18, Btry A 351 FA, Hon disch 3/5/19, Overseas 6/19/18 to 2/16/19, Marbache Sector.
We believe he deserted “Carrie”. Then shortly afterwards, starts a life with my grandmother Lucy Ann Butler of Bridgeton, NJ. We also believe that the “Mabins” stood for his mother’s maiden name. There is a “road block” they’re as well.
While working for the B : O RR, my grandfather was witness to his best friend’s murder. His friend was playing cards on the train while my grandpop worked as a porter. His friend was accused of cheating and was shot dead on the spot in front of my grandfather and other card players. I would love to find out the name of his friend.
William M. Parrish also lived in Bridgeton, NJ just prior to marrying Lucy Ann Butler. (That’s where they met. The story goes that he was walking down the street and spotted my grandmother sitting on the porch and fell in love instantly!) They moved for a short time just outside of Philia, PA near the Philia. Butlers. Then moved to Dunellun/Piscataway, NJ where they resided the remainder of their lives. Some other jobs held by my grandfather were – mortician’s helper, foundry worker, and a security guard at a Muhlenberg hospital in NJ.
If this sounds like someone in your family or someone your family knew of, please contact me as I’m slowly finding out bit pieces of my grandfathers’ mysterious past and have hit a major “brick wall”. Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

Query: I am researching my fathers parents-His mother went by the name Neva (Lily Geneva Sheets). She died in 1933/Oklahoma, when my father was 5 years old. His dad went by Ted(Theodore Roosevelt Miller). Ted’s father’s name was Leven Benton Miller, whom died in 1913 in Arkansas. Ted’s mother was Martha Jane Revis (Reavis, or Reeves). Martha Jane’s Father’s name was “Tom” Thomas J. Reavis. He was born to James Jackson Reavis and Mary Elizabeth Williams. James Jackson Reavis and Mary Elizabeth Williams were married in Cherokee County Georgia in 1844. Martha Jane told the family that her Dad, Tom Reavis, was half Cherokee, and that her Grandmother, Elizabeth Williams was full blood Cherokee. I can not find any records of any kind on Elizabeth Williams, before she married James Jackson Reavis. I would like to know what her parents names where. My Dad is in his “70’s”, and has asked me to find out if he was part Cherokee, as he was told. I want to know who her parents/family were, so my Great Great Grandchildren know who they are, if they have Indian blood, I want them aware of/ and proud of that ( my husbands family on his mothers side came from Iceland, my children are very aware of their Viking heritage) If they do not, I want to be able to leave something telling them who they were, and where they came from. Any help will be very appreciated. Would especially like to share info with other decendants of my ancestors. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my quest.

Query: Ferguson / Lycan / Cherokee?
This page mentions a Vaughan who is thought to be part Cherokee who married a Lycan as her second husband.
I have heard of a John Ferguson SR. who was said to have married an Amy lycan too I but I don’t know if this is related but it is interesting anyway.
Jane Jenny Vaughan, b. 1800, Cabell, Virginia; d. Aft. 1870; m. (1) John Ferguson Jr, Abt. 1815, Cabell, VA; m. (2) John Ferguson, 1815, Cabell, Virginia.
They begot a Martha Vaughan who married Goodwin Lycan. More about Goodwin Lycan and Martha Vaughan: marriage: February 5, 1817.
Martha Vaughan, b. July 19, 1802, Kanawha County, Virginia; d. 1906, Virginia; m. (1) Unknown; m. (2) other husband of Martha Vaughan; m. (3) Goodwin Lycan, February 5, 1817; m. (4) Goodwin Lycan, February 5, 1817.
Anyway it looks like there maybe a Lycan/Ferguson/Cherokee connection even though this page is talking about some other type of Cherokee connection. I am also looking into Nancy (Emma) Smith and hoping she is my Cherokee Ancestor.

Query: I am living in New Zealand. My father was fostered from birth and the surname he has (and mine)is that of his real mother. I remember as a child, him telling me that when he eventually found his birth mother he found out information about his father and he told me that his grandfather (my great grandfather) was Cherokee and had come to New Zealand for the Otago Gold rushes. This would be some time in the period 1860 to 1880. At that time there was a large traffic of miners from Australia and California who came to New Zealand following the rushes here so it is possible that this “family story” has some basis in fact. I guess this is a long shot as I dont have any further info, but if any one knows of any of their family that could have made this trip I would be interested to hear from them.

Query: I too, am searching for my Cherokee heritage. My g-grandfather is Andrew Webb, son of Jasper Webb. Andrew married Alice Carver, daughter of Aden Andrew Carver, son of Israel Carver. They are all from the Cherokee reservation in N.C..the uppermost section called Smokemont. Both the Webb’s and Carver’s were land owners in and around that area, as well as Tennesee and Georgia. My gg-grandpa Aden Andrew Carver was still living off of Webb’s creek near the family church when he died. He is buried at the top of the mountain there at the Smokemont church and campground in the old indian cemetary. I have hiked and climbed my way to the top many times to visit. Our Webb-Carver reuion is held there at Smokemont every second weekend in August. Although many families attend, no one has yet been able to tell us where the Cherokee connection has come in…which side was Cherokee or was both? And how far back the line goes. Hope someone can help.

Query: Letter regarding a girl named Beulah, child of Charled Ed Baker; GrDaughter of Charles W. Baker; a man named George Miller; and Kate Baker (?) residing on a reservation IT, OK. Anyone have info on these people? I think George Miller was Cherokee. Am trying to locate info on Beulah and Kate Baker? Miller? Beulah was a small child in 1888, I have a picture of her taken in Nevada, Mo.
Letter to Charles W. Baker, Alton, Illinois
Bartlesville, I.T. August 19, 1888
Dr. Sir,
I recieved a letter from Nell yesterday giving me a complete history of Kate and Geo Millers, proceeding before they left Nevada. (Note this is Nevada, Mo)
They are living here now with Frank and his family. I would have nothing to do with them, as sinners I suspicioned them and then he sent for Frank and family knowing that he had become so digraded that he should work with him as he pleased.
I understand Miller and Kate occupies the same room every night and it would be no trouble to prove it. I intend to have them put off the reservation or if they don’t go when notified they will have to answer for their crime at the U.S. Court at Ft. Smith, Arkansas.
I am determined they shall leave here let it comewhat it may. I will not have them around me that is a sure thing.
Nell advised me to write to you and advise you to come and get Beulah, for it is a shame to have her grow up in disgrace for she is a sweet child and as smart as can be and you are the proper one to have her.
If you come after her you had better bring an officer with you as there maybe not be one handy here when you come.
I think the sooner you act – the better it will be for if they fly from here there is no telling where they will go.
Yours Respy,
Geo H. Schroeder

Query: I am looking for information on my father, Andrew Clinton McAffrey (nickname Buster) from Tulsa, Oklahoma. His father’s name was Bud, although that could have been a nickname. His mother’s name was Ada or Ida. She died in childbirth, probably around 1925?. My father was born July 10, 1914. He died on Feb 5, 1963 in Charlotte, NC. I was 10 years old, then. He married Lois Carter from Lexington, North Carolina. That would have been around 1938 in Lexington, NC. After my father died, we lost contact with his relatives. Bud would have died around 1959. I vaguely remember hearing about that and I think I was about 8. My father had 13 brothers and sisters, some sibling names: Sonny, Hugh, Hiawatha, Mildred, Cleo, Kenneth, Raymond?, Pearl?, Ronnie?. So, there should be a large family. My father was in the military (WWII). I believe one of his brothers was killed in the war (WWII). I know my father was part Cherokee Indian. I am trying to trace my background. I would like to find some of his brothers and/or sisters, if any are still living. If you have any information on him, or any of his relatives, please contact me.

I have been unsuccessful in locating a roll number. I am thinking she was not on a roll but on the Nation’s census. My grandmother was born in 1895 to Charles Presley Boydston and Hattie Jane Harris in Columbus, Kansas. She died in 1979. Hattie Jane Harris was born in 1875 to Milton Harris and Lanah Haynes in Kansas, possibly Oswego. Lanah Haynes was born 1843 in Ohio. Please try to help me make the connection.

Query: I am seeking info on a Mary Lou Rains? Not sure about spelling. This would have been her married name (2nd). Her first marriage would have been to my great-great grandfather who I think was John Fenley or Finley. My g-grandfather who was “Pose” Finley always said that his grandfather or g-grandfather was a Cherokee Indian Chief whose name was “Pose Yellowcorn”. My grandfather was definitely Cherokee, but whether the other is true I don’t know. My g-grandfather was born in Fulton couty, Ga, but later moved to Upson county. He died in 1970. he was married to Lillie mae Ward daughter of George Washington Ward and Susan Meadows. Susan Meadows father was either James or John Meadows who I am told was a Capt. in the Confederate Army. Any help would be appreciated.

Query: My granmother’s mother was reported tohave been at least 3/4 Cherokee. The story that I have always been told was that she was sent on the Trail of Tears with her family as a child and that in lieu of a roll number, her father accepted land parcels instead. The old family did one time own some land in and around Talequah until ther last several years as it has been passed down. The name was Welch in Georgia as a girl and as a maiden name. My mother always said that her uncle’s registered and had a roll number. As much as anything I would like to affiliate with the Cherokees in truth by blood as I believe they were, and are, strong noble people. Please assist or advise as able.

Query: I am looking for information about my ancestor, Chief Liash Duthuro. He hid his family in Tennessee and allowed himself to be transported on the Trail of Tears. He survived the Trail and taught archery at the University of Oklahoma until his death at the age of 120. He was refused documentation of his extreme age because ‘he was Indian, not a man’. I am sure of the spelling of his first name as it is still used as a Christian name in Tennessee, but the surname ‘Duthuro’ I’m not sure of since all of my family history was verbal. I spelled it as it sounds.

Query: Baley Woodrum and Absalom Woodrum, brothers, sons of Benjamin F. and Mary Rice Woodrum, grandsons of Jacob Woodrum filed for Cherokee Nation citizenship in August 1896 and it was denied by the Dawes Commission. They claimed their father Benjamin was Cherokee. My guess would be that g’father Jacob’s wife (name unknown) was Cherokee. Jacob lived in Wilson county TN and several of his children to include Baley (1846) were born there. Can anybody help with the Cherokee tie?
