Just happened to look up one name (Eliza Raper) this afternoon and haven’t moved from the screen for three hours. HOOKED, I’m afraid. What links would you recommend directly related to this branch of the family? I’d like to have some way of accessing old maps dating back to earliest home sites just to start with some context. Query: I would like to find out more about my great great great grandmother, who was Cherokee. I know that she lived in East Tennessee or western North Carolina during the Civil War. My great grandfather, named Thomas Brannon, lived with her for a time then. I believe that she was his paternal grandmoher and that she married his Brannon grandfather during the period from 1810 to 1830. She may have been a widow when my great-grandfather lived with her. At any rate, I think she was living among the Cherokee at that point. At the time of my grandmother’s birth (1883), Thomas Brannon was living in Sweetwater, Tennessee. My grandmother’s name was Tennessee Myrtle Brannon. She married Ralph Crumbliss around 1903, probably in Chattanooga or Richard City, Tennessee.

Query: I am looking for information regarding Cherokees residing in the southern part of Arizona in the late 1800’s. When my grandmother was alive, she adamantly insisted that she was 100% Cherokee native and that she and her father resided on an Indian Reservation somewhere in the locality of Solomonville. I have been reading and researching, but have yet to find any information regarding cherokees living on a reservation in southern Arizona. Any help or guidance with my query would be greatly appreciated.

Query: My Great Grandmother was, Matilda Harris. The story told to me was at the age of 18 years old her mother walked,” The Trail of Tears”. I don’t know who her parents were. Matilda Harris married a German, Samuel E. Cramer on 3 July 1851 in Morgon Co. MO. The had 5 children that I know of, Dan Cramer, Silas, Martha Ellen, Mary Ann,(my grandmother) and Fritz Cramer. I’ve searched for many years trying to find information about Matilda Harris and her family. I only found one Matilda Harris on the Dowes Rolls, it put her as age 8. I don’t think the ages were right, but maybe it was recorded wrong. Does anyone know?
My Grandmother Mary Ann Cramer married first a John Baughman, had four children. John was killed in a mining accident, then Mary Ann married second, my grandfather Thomas Franklin Gilbert. He was French and Cherokee. I found a census record that I believe was his parents. James, and Eliza Gilbert, in Polk Co, MO. It said they came from Ohio to Ind. James was killed, and Eliza, died. The two older boys, who were William, and James went into the Union army,(civil War) and didn’t come home. Thomas Franklin Gilbert, served in the MO Militia. I know Thomas Franklin Gilbert, didn’t register on the rolls. He distrusted them. So no help there.
There was a daughter born to James, and Eliza. Gilbert after the 1850 cencus. Mary (Molly) Gilbert, she married a Dr. Benjimin Tinsley, I think in Clay Co. MO. They moved into the Territory, around Foyl, OK, and lived there for 40 years, and died there. If anyone can give me a clue on this family, I’d be so grateful.

Query: I have some info on Chief Glass. (1790’s forward) His mark appears on several treaties. I am very anxious to link my ancestor Mary Sarah Glass, born 1806 in Ga. to The Glass. Sarah Mary married William Isaacks August 1821 and crossed into Texas in 1822. They were ‘drafted’ into Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred”. Family lore has it that Chief Glass walked the Trail of Tears. My aunt who told me this has passed away and other living family members cannot or refuse to remember any other details handed down to them. Sarah Mary may have had a sister named Abby who married a John(?) Clark. I will share what I have of course. I am very eager to correspond with anyone who knows of this link. I believe my aunt’s story is true because all other info she imparted has been historically documented.

Query: Looking for information on my great-grandmother and her family. She was married twice so I have two names for her: Martha Ann Martin (2nd marriage) and Martha Ann Baker.(1st marriage). I would like to know her maiden name. According to her death certificate, her father’s name was Carlie Baker. (I wonder if this is accurate, however. Could this really be the name of her first husband?!) Her mother’s name was Minnie Sims. All these persons were supposedly born in Georgia. I would also like more information on Minnie Sims–maiden name, etc. (If I knew her maiden name maybe I could find her on the tribal rolls.) Martha Ann Baker was born June 4, 1843 and died Sep. 8, 1927. She had two sons by her first husband (name unknown, unless it is really Carlie Baker!)–Oley and Olie–and six children by her second husband, James Kin Martin–Joe, Charles, Rilla, Dovie, Lizzie, Mindy. My grandfather was Joe Martin. All my life I was told he was half Cherokee and he and his children looked Indian. I have a picture of my great -grandmother, Martha Ann Baker Martin, who has very dark skin and black hair. When I was growing up in Georgia I was told that my grandfather’s family came from the “mountains”, supposedly in the Cherokee area and that half of them moved to the area of Douglasville, Georgia at the time of the Removal and the rest of the family stayed in the mountains. So my family would be part of the Eastern Band of the Cherokees. I grew up in an era when you were supposed to be ashamed to be an Indian, but I refused to be. I am not looking for any benefits except to be recognized by the tribe that my mother’s family. I have always felt we belonged to.

Kathie Haney Clark
Query: I’m looking for Cherokee, English and Irish family who arrived in U.S. in the 1800s or were born, lived, died in Georgia or South Carolina with Sir Names of Haney (Irish?), Morrison (Cherokee Indian?), Garner (English?), Whitworth (English?), or Belamy (English?). I believe James Haney entered the U.S. by way of Philadelphia around 1850. I’m trying to pin this down, but I have large gaps. I can’t trace him to Georgia or South Carolina.

Query: My great grandmother was Hannah Johnson, daughter of Benjamin Johnson and Sarah Galloway. Hannah was born in 1849 in Ky, Tn or VA. (depending on what census you look at). Handed down information in the family states that Benjamin’s father and grandfather lived with the indians and Benjamin’s grandfather “was married to a daughter of one of Powhatan’s wives” and that Hannah got to go to the Cherokee councils in Tennessee when she was a child”. That’s all the info I have. If this means anything or you could give me a clue where to look, I would appreciate it.
