Query: I am trying to prove a Native branch in my family tree. The sad thing is that my great grandfather wouldn’t admit that his grandmother was indeed Native American. Here is what I am looking for. In the mid 1950’s he received a letter from some government agency stating that if he would claim his grandmother, that he would be entitled to land based on her heritage. What I need to find out is which agencies were sending letters such as that during that time frame. Much of this information is coming from my mother who lived with them at the time. She remembers a letter that he received and sadly, refused to acknowledge. I keep thinking that it has to be a part of the Indian Claims Commission but I am not sure. I apologize for the lack of information and the vagueness of my query but this is all the information that I have at this time other than a picture of her from the mid to late 1800’s in a Cherokee Tear Dress.
