Query: I am researching a John R. Dickens or Dickins. He is My Great Grandfather. This is what I have: INDIAN NAME: KOSKY or KOSKG or ROSOKEY, Rahsokey.
THE DAILY MOBILE PRESS MARCH 25, 1885
DEATH OF AN INDIAN CHIEF. JOHN R. DICKINS, OF DICKINS’ FERRY.
On Monday, John R. Dickins died at his residence at Dickins’ Ferry on Dog River, about twenty-five miles from the city. John R. Dickins was,and has been, for a score more years familiar to the eyes of every man, woman and child in and about Mobile. He was made conspicuous by his eccentric peculiarities which display themselves in a strong desire to practice the habits and customs of the Indians even while living in a civilized and intelligent community. His life was an eventful one, and fraught with many incidents and adventures of greater magnitude than are met with in the lives of most men; but little is known, however,of the details of his life.
He was born in Georgia about 70 years ago. From Georgia he went to Texas, and it is believed that it was there he was first thrown with the Indian tribes with whom he afterwards became identified. He went to the home at which he died several years before the war. He was a frequent visitor to this city, and always attracted attention by his attire, which was the full dress of an Indian, consisting of buckskin coat with breeches and leggins of the same material, ornamented with beads and a buckskin cap,set off with feathers. It has been his habit to vist to Indian Territory where he would devote several months to visiting the different tribes and looking up his friends. One peculiarity of these vists was that he would leave home without the knowledge of his family, who never knew of his whereabouts until his return. At the time of his death he held the title of chief of the tribes.
(Dickens Ferry was also known as Dog River.)
News Paper clipping sent to me by Betty Clark Rodgers,Pasca. Mississ. MARCH 27, 1885
Col. Jno. R. Dickins, of Dickens’ Ferry, has passed away to the blissful hunting grounds. The old man paid his last debt of mortal infirmities last Monday, at the age of sixty-seven. He had many friends to whom his suit of buck-skins was familiar, who will be sorry to hear that the old Cherokee chief is no more.
I also found on Microfilm, records relating to enrollments of Eastern Cherokee 1908 to 1910 volumes 5-7 applications 16001-31000 Microscopy No. 685.

I am told that one of her grandmothers was a full blood Cherokee. Looking for any official information to prove that. She married George Allen and they lived in Paw Paw, KY until they moved to Port Clinton, Ohio. There children were George Jr., Robert, James (my dad), Patty, Betty and Anna Jean. She had another daughter, Irene, but she died early in life. Everyone of them have the classic Indian look. I hit a deadend looking into America’s history. Query: I’ve been told that there is Cherokee ancestry on my grandfather’s side; however, I’d like to confirm this for myself. I’ve traced his line up to Archibald McMahan who settled in Sevier County, Tennessee. Throughout this line (my grandfather’s father), here are some of the surnames, all coming from Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina: HUTSON, BYRD, McNULTY, HOWARD. I don’t know much about my grandfather’s mother’s line, except that her name was Sarah Jane SMITH (married to Lewis Caswell Howard), born in Tennessee and died in Oklahoma and her mother’s name was Mariah, with no record of a last name. I run into a dead-end with her on that side. There is no record anywhere of Mariah’s last name, her parents, or her husband. Does anyone have any information of any of these surnames among the Cherokee in this area throughout the late 1700’s and early 1800s?

Query: My granddmother, Dessie Cottage Vickery married my grandfather John Callahan Elrod, the year unknown. There had always been stories about Indian blood in our family. When my grandfather John died somewhere between 1925 and 1936, my grandmother was requested by his father to send him back to be buried with his people and not to bury him in a white man’s cemetery. My grandmother, at that time, lived in Virginia. She sent his body back to be buried.with his people. I do not have much information other than I do know my grandfather’s body was sent back to his father to be buried much to the distress of our family. I thought how hard it must have been for her to do that since his father had no control over her, but then I realized that if she loved him and he really was of Cheokee heritage, then I guess she could do it for him.
