Query: I was born in 1963 and adopted the same year. I have recently obtained non-identifing information from my birth records and it list my birth father as “American Indian, Tribe unknow”. I have had minimal contact with my birth mother but she refuses to give me any information about my birthfather other then to say she thinks he came from Cherokee. The funny think is, I always knew I think…growing up I was the dark headed, olive skinned kid( with blue eyes). Once my adoptive father took me to a reservation in Oklahoma and an older women told him I was Cherokee. My father said, No she is Italian. Just wondering if there is anything I can do. I have contacted the state of Tennessee which does have open records and they are going to attempt to see if the fathers name was listed. This was 1963 and most times it was not.

Query: My great grandmothers name was Nellie LIGHTFOOT TRUEBLOOD and she was born around 1898 in Perquimanns county in North Carolina. She died in 1927 in Maryland. Her parent’s names were Alonzo and Kate Lightfoot Trueblood. I know that Alonzo’s mother’s name was Ellen Trueblood. Nellie had several brothers and sisters named Josh, Henry, Odessa, Rebecca, Leila, Pearl, Mavor, Mocel, Mamie and Ceclephis. Nellie had 2 daughters – one also named Odessa and Leila. Nellie’s boyfriend’s name was Henry JONES and he was born in the same town and later lived near Nags Head Chowan County. Henry had one brother, named William that lived until he was 103 years old. I have been told Henry is 100% cherokee and Nellie is part cherokee. I know nothing else about the Jones Family. After Nellie died, Odessa went to live with her uncle Esau and Pattie Johnson in Pasquatank County Elizabeth City. Does anyone have any information on these Families? Particulary Kate Trueblood and what her maiden name may have been. ALSO my grandfather says he is part cherokee – His mother being 100%. His mother’s name was Mattie Hill and she was married to Stewart Hill, they were born in 1886 and 1885 respectively. Stewart’s Father’s name was Benjamin F Hill and he was born 1838. The families resided between Scuppernong Tyrell NC and later Pasquatank county. Does anyone have information on this family, particulary Mattie. Her maiden name may have been Gilliam but I am not sure.

Query: I am currently researching my family background on Ancestry.com. My maternal grand mother’s maiden name was Thompson. I have found out that John Thompson Sr 1767-1835 who married Ahniswakie Vann is my 4th great grandfather. The family link is through their son Archibald Thompson. John Thompson Jr and Laugh at Mush were also their children. His father was Theopholis Thompson and his mother was of Scots-Irish and Cheraw Indian descent. The Cheraw tribe was gradually taken into other tribes like the Lumbees. They lived in Robeson NC where the Lumbees are centralized. John Thompson Sr was born in Robeson NC and most likely part Lumbee before moving to the Cherokees in Eastern Tennessee. He served as a translator between the Cherokee and the US government in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. H is name is listed on these treaties as a translator. I believe that some of the family is listed on the Dawes Rolls. There is also some evidence that my family was part of the Cherokees that moved to Alabama and joined up with the Choctaw and Chickasaws. From Alabama, some moved to Texas as part of the Thompson Choctaws that settled in Mt Tabor Texas. Some then went on to settle in Oklahoma with the Western Band of Cherokees. I guess I am requesting verification of this information and what it means if this is found to be true.

Query: Hello, I am trying to obtain further information about my great grandmother Grace Loma Lowfoot, (Lofoot). My uncle provided the folowing information to help. Anything you can provide would be helpful. If there is a source to go to, or place to visit for research, please advise. Grace Loma Lowfoot (or Grace Loma Kingsley after marrying by Grandad). The Lowfoot might also have been spelled Lofoot.I also have some papers where she is referred to as Grace Loma Milborne (possibly Milburn. My mom said she also called herself Newata (not sure of the spelling). Dad’s father was Nathan Colfax Kingsley, and his father was Oliver Kingsley, son of Cyrus H. Kingsley. My guess is that Dad’s mother was the product of a marriage of a full-blooded Cherokee (don’t know the name) and a family named Milborne (or Milburn). This branch of the family has little history to go on.
