Query: I am searching for information on my great grandfather John Watson. He may have been Creek. Also, he may been born in Illonois about 1835. The earliest definite information I have on him is that he was in Texas in 1866 where he married Sarah R. Baxter in Dallas County. They lived most of their lives in Hunt County Texas. Sarah R. was the daughter of John J. Baxter and Sarah “Ruth” Stayton Baxter. Sarah R. Baxter Watson passed away in Hunt County Texas in 1918. Her Death Certificate lists her as a widow, so John Watson passed away prior to 1918. However, I believe he was alive in 1903. Any information will be deeply appreciated.

Query: I too am looking for my “roots” in the Cherokee Nation. My great-grandmother (Maternal), used to sit me on her lap, and try to relate stories to me; she was so old, and I so young! She passed away from smoke inhalation/ and or burns, at 95 years. (she was mostly blind, and did not realize her sweater was ablaze). Ok, here’s what I remember not much..she told me that she was of full blood, (Cherokee) and the part I did not “get”, either she or her mother was born on the “Trail of Tears”. I know that she definitely looked of full blood. It seems that the family tried to keep me from discovering more? I know that my grandfather did not read or write English, so I figure that this may have embarrassed them? Perhaps the humiliations of the past, and/or the need to “be secret.” Because appearently I come from a line of those who did not stay on the “Trail of Tears”! My “family” settled in Southern Illinois. Anyone out there with some info. on that area?

Query: I am interested in information related to Cherokee involvement in the French and Indian War. My ancestors were rumored to be descended from a group of Cherokee’s that went to Pennsylvania in 1755 to fight against the french. My ancestry is so distant I don’t hold much hope of verifing my personal connection to the Cherokee Nation, but would like to learn about the history involved. I beleive that they had come from the Kanawha Valley in western Virginia and most returned to that area. I am descended from Celia Buzzard(b.1882) daughter of Jeremiah Buzzard(b.1832) son of Jacob Buzzard(b.1810) son of Samuel Buzzard(b.unknown).My family oral history also said that Jeremiah Buzzards wife, Lucetta Baer(b.1844) daughter of Ludwig and Catherina Baer was part Native American. After reading some of the other queries I realized how many people have heard the same type of things as I did growing up. If anyone can help me or direct me to some good historical reading I would greatly appreaciate it.

Query: Am looking for earlier family of David J. (Johnson?) Goode who married Melissa Eliza Wood Goode in West Virginia when he was 18 and she was 15 years old. This was in the later 1800s. They had twelve children, two deceased as diptheria victims (very young) while the family was still in WV. Would like info previous to that. Cherokee rumor is strong. Tall, strong looks possibly confirms.

Query: I am attempting to help my wife trace what family legend states is Native American heritage, perhaps through her paternal grandmother, Cora Elizabeth Teel. A recently compiled family history gives info re. her grandmother as being the child of Elisha Marion Teel and Edith Henson Teel. Daughter Cora Elizabeth may have been adopted from either the Osage or Cherokee tribes. Family records show she was born on Christmas, 1895 in Dixon, Pulaski County, Missouri and died Feb. 29, 1920 in Pocahontas, ILlinois. She was affiliated with the Salvation Army. She is buried in Suggs Cemetery in Pocohontas, Illinois. While there is no record of her being Native American, that is the family story. One of my wife’s uncles from a different marriage of Mr. Teel states that he remembers visiting Cora Teel, where she lived with “other Indians.” Please contact us at your convenience if you have any information.

Query: I am trying to find the papers needed to prove our Cherokee link. My g-g-grandmother was Narcissus Saphronia Campbell (Nica, Nisa, Nerrie, Narsis, Narcis, etc.) She was born in Phillips County, Arkansas in 1836-1838 (depending on what paper or census you look at). She married her cousin John Henry Thomas Campbell who was also born in Phillips County 1838. So far I have found no marriage record for them. These two are both supposed to be full-blooded Cherokee. They had several kids, one of whom was my grandfather, Francis Marion C. Campbell. Another son was John Henry Lee Campbell, born Sept. 1866 in KY. He married Leona ?? Flute (divorced from a Flute, maiden name unknown at present) in 1899 Hancock County, KY. They are shown on 1900 KY census with one son, Ivory Lee Campbell, born March 1900 in KY. Both John Henry Lee and wife Leona are listed on the 1912 Per Capita Payroll of Cherokee. They are listed as full-blooded. Along with them are shown three stepdaughters for John. Jessie Flute, 24 yrs old, Charlotte Flute, 21 yrs old, and Aggie (maybe Maggie) Flute, 16 yrs old, all full-blooded. Also shown is a son Oolskuntay Campbell 12 years old, which I believe is the one listed as Ivory Lee Campbell on 1900 census, the age matches. In addition, there is shown one daughter Susan Campbell, 12 yrs old (would have to be born Dec. 1900). Both of these are also shown as full-blooded. Both Oolskuntay and Susan are listed in the Index to the Final Rolls of Citizens and Cherokee Freedmen on page 263. This group is obviously of Cherokee descent, but I can find NO birth records or marriage records for Thomas and Narcissus. I have a death certificate for her, but so far can only find a church death and burial record for Thomas, who died in Hancock County 1898. If John Henry Lee is full-blooded, then that means my g-grandfather, Francis Marion Campbell is also full-blooded. I have to find some records on Thomas and Narcissus to prove their Cherokee descent before my siblings and I can apply for enrollment back into the tribe. We have been trying to prove this for 40 years. Does anyone have any info on this family or any records that could prove ancestry?

Query: My Great Great Great Grandfather was full blood Cherokee either from North TX or OK. He married a white woman and apparently moved from the reservation. All I know is his last name was Monday. What I do know is that his wife gave birth to my Great Great Grandmother, Syrilda Monday in 1866 in TX and Grandma Syrilda died 1940. Grandma Syrilda married Thomas Maguire in 1886. My grandmother told me that Syrilda was never register since they would have had to travel by horse and buggy. Once my Great Great Grandmother married my Great Great Grandfather, they moved and lived in Saint Jo TX, right across the Leon OK boarder. Several of my relatives have tried to find our link, but failed. If I do get more information, I will let someone know. My grandmother is searching through her stuff to see if she can at least find out where My Great Great Grandmother was born. I have been trying to search my history for a long time and keep running into roadblocks. I will also keep looking myself, but need your help.
According to my Great Aunt what she was told, my Great Great Great Grandfather Monday was from Oklahoma not Texas. They believe that my Great Great Grandmother was born in Collen County (I might not have the correct spelling). At one time my Great Great Great Grandparents, Great Great Grandparents and Great Grandparents would cross back and forth by a bridge that was in Ill Bend, 14 miles from Saint Jo. The bridge was washed away which caused them to go less into Oklahoma since they would have to go to Gainesville or Wichita Fall TX to cross although my Great Grandparents did live in Gainesville at one time. I was also told that a Great Aunt Lillie was born in Ok on the reservation. Her complete name is Lillie Moore parents were Cora (McGuire) and Thomas Moore. I was also told by my Great Aunt that Great Aunt Lillie’s children did try to trace our roots, but failed since the courthouse where some of the papers were filed burned. I hope that we can bridge this gap.

He murdered that man (who turned out to be her brother). After realizing that the man was her brother, he was so distraught that he went to another roon and slit his own throat. Can anyone give me any information about Jefferson Conner and where he came from? who his parents were?
