The family eventually was in California. I think Samuel had 3 older sibs — John, Mary, Rebecca, and 3 younger ones — Lewis, Ellen, John. She ended up in East Prairie, Mo where her obituary says that she was buried in Dogwood Cemetary. She had three children that I am aware of. Dora re-married Clarence O’Neil and lived in St. Louis, Mo where she died in City Hospital, in the 1940’s or 1950’s. Query: My grandmother Mamie Gilstrap attended Carlisle Industrial School as well as some of her siblings. The younger children were placed in Tomaha Indian school that was at that time in Michigan. On the Carlisle list of students the are listed as eastern Cherokee. They were given land allotments in 1909 in (I don’t understand this either), Montana. In 1914 they were told that they had to homestead and all but one of the land file numbers were changed and it was an odd number to begin with, out of sequence. GGrandmother was Lou Gilstrap. Family bible has her as born January 18, 1966. That her father was Louis Ladd and her mother Charity Ladd and that Lou had a brother Louis who died at age 16. From the national archives I recived a copy of a notrized witnessed statement from Lou Gilstrap stateing she was 3/4 Cherokee. There are no records of my Grandfather George Washington Gilstrap of Greenville, SC marraige to Lou only of his first wife Carrie Dalton.**With the information I have does anyone have any suggestions? Query: My query is a shot in the dark but I thought I’d try anyways. There is a family story about a baby that was from a Cherokee family. Around or just before the Trail of Tears, a female ancestor of mine in Georgia went down to a river or creek some where in the state and met two Cherokee women who gave a baby to her. This baby grew up in the family and became a part of us. I think the baby was a boy. Apparently, the women had to give the baby up so it wouldn’t be killed or die in some way. If they were embarking on the Trail of Tears then the women may have been aware of the hardships that lay ahead and thought the child could die enroute. This story has been passed around the family for several generations. I don’t have any other details, unfortunately. My questions are: Are there many stories like this where children were given up around that time period? Are there stories of this sort recorded somewhere that I can research? Am I looking for a needle in a haystack? If you have any ideas of where I could start to ask more questions, I would greatly appreciate it. I would imagine that the two women I spoke of ended up in Oaklahoma (?) if they survived the sad journey. Please advise at your next convenience.
