Query: I am trying to confirm the source of the Cherokee Blood in my family. My GG Grandmother was Mary Foster, daughter of Thomas Foster and Elizabeth Pressgrove. They came to Benton Co., Arkansas from Bedford Co., Tennessee in the 1840’s. Mary Foster married Leander Jones in Tennessee. Their son was Thomas Jefferson Jones. An Indian Agent who was also a local Doctor came to the home of Thomas Jefferson Jones in Pea Ridge, Arkansas in 1892 and registered all his children on a Roll as being 1/4 Cherokee. This means that Thomas Jefferson Jones was 1/2 Cherokee and his mother, Mary Foster was full blood. Can anyone tell me what roll to look for, which contains the names of the children of Thomas Jefferson Jones? Does anyone have any information on my GGG Grandparents, Thomas Foster and Elizabeth Pressgrove?

Query: I am trying to research my heritage on my father’s side. He told me several times that his grandfather was full blood Cherokee and supposedly ate raw meat ( I don’t know if that is a trait or not).According to my grandmother’s death certificate her parents names were Jim Keller and Emma Muse and she was born in Alabama in 1900. They had several children (Hannah Jane my grandmother), Tommy,Monroe,Viola,Lillus,Lilly,Nellie,Turner,Pat ( a male),and Floyd.According to some research done earlier by my brother (now deceased) she was possibly born in a place named Pine Gap Alabama.I am having difficulty confirming that Pine Gap was actually in Alabama. It appears that it could have been the area later named The Narrows.Any help would be appreciated.I just want to know if for certain my Ggrandfather was Cherokee and what his life was like because I would be so proud to know that I am Cherokee by blood.I would also like to see pictures of this place if possible.Thank you so much.!

Query: My name is April Detmer. My maiden name is Winters. I know that I am part cherokee but I can’t link my family. All I know is that my father has papers of some sort showing that we have rights to the cherokee reservation in Oklahoma but since my grandfather died in 1981 I haven’t had much contact with my father and his mother and sister. My father is Stanley Allen Winters he was born in 1953. My mother is Marjean Kay McFadden she was born in 1954. My fathers father is the late Melvin Allen Winters I believe he was born in 1921. Melvin had 2 daughters before he married my fathers mother who is Bessy Verna Lee Henry. That is as far back as I can go. I know that I have a distant cousin who use to live in Oklahoma but I’m not sure if he is still there, his name is Joe Winters. I also know that I have a great uncle in Texas that goes by (Pete) Winters. I Also have a great aunt in Texas named Ruby Richardson. I know that I have family all over but can’t get a trace on how everyone is related or exactly who they are. My grandfather (Melvin) was half cherokee. Which means his father was full blooded. Query: I have made no real effort to trace my family history except for that of my mother’s side of the family. She was white and my father was Cherokee. My father was born in Watts, Oklahome in 1914 and his name was Lee Scoggins (possibly Scroggins). His father was Tom Scoggins and his mother’s maiden name was Beanstick. I don’t know her first name. Tom Scoggins was killed when my father was a young boy and he and his two older sisters were place in the Indian Orphanage in Pryor, Oklahoma because their mother could not care for them. My father was adopted by a white couple who took him to Poteau, Oklahoma and raised him there. Following his adoption the BIA made regular visits to check on his well being. My dad told me that a BIA employee (Mr. Shwartz) gave him a “Five Civilized Tribes Card” which showed him to be a full-blood Cherokee. The card was lost in the Pacific during WW-II. To my knowledge my dad never tried to replace the card or to establish tribal recognition. The only relative of my father that I met and whose name I remember was his first cousin, Grant Beanstick who lived in Stillwell. I’m told that the orphanage in Pryor burned down many years ago. Also as you know the Five Civilized Tribes Office in Muskogee no longer exists. The Cherokee HQ Office has no record of my dad. The only other thing that I know was something that was told to me by a very old woman who died more than forty years ago. According to her, she knew my father’s family when they were living in Muskogee. And according to her my dad was the biological son of a man named Johnson (or Jackson) who was a full-blood. He was called “Peg-Leg” because he had a wooden leg. She said that Tom Scoggins was a half-blood and that Johnson was a full-blood and for that reason my dad was much darker than his two sisters. I don’t know who would have time to read all of this but it would be interesting if any could reply.
