Query: My gggrandmother was full blooded Cherokee (and I think ggrand as well). She was called “Ru” sp? Rhu/Rue/ also Rurah. She was a medicine woman/herb doctor/midwife. Older relatives who have since passed on remember that she would ride her horse to make the ‘house calls’. Ru and her husband survived the Trail of Tears but I do not know birthdates. Her daughter’s name is Annie b abt 1872 and who may have taken the last name “White”. Annie married a white man, Henry “Bud” ROBINSON in 1889 in Haralson Co GA according to fam. They met in Texarkana AR where she lived after the removal. Neither family wanted them to marry so he “stole her away” as family tells. They eloped- got married in Haralson Co GA approx 1889. However, I cannot find marriage documentation of any kind and have had no problem w others in the area and time-frame. They lived in AL, GA, and later in Cass Co TX approx 26 mi from Texarkana AR (I think up until her death but know for sure it was until 1910 at least) and the rest of her days were spent there or in TX/AR area. She had a tumor that was untreatable and she died at abt 51 yrs old around 1917-24. They had several children in AL and twins in tx as well as another daughter there, a total of 10 children. I have found many Annie WHITE’S listed on Dawes but unsucessful at getting the census cards image online. I know from US census papers that Annie, her father and mother were all born in AL, most likely the RANBURNE/CLEBURNE or Randolph Co areas. I have a pic of Annie, Henry and their fam and think she may have had a younger sister as well who is in the pic, possibly Ella? Any info appreciated!

Query: I am searching for the name of my great great grandmother. I know very little, and am currently looking for a needle in a haystack. I know that she bore one child with an Irishman, and that child was raised by the POOLE family. (I am not sure if this family is her fathers family, but hope for that to be the case, as otherwise I have even less information). Her mother was full indian, and married to her father. her parents were both murdered by the KKK sometime between 1890 and 1900, when my gr gr grandmother was around 1 year of age. Her name is Carrie Elizabeth POOLE. The only other information I have is that the murder and the Indian heritage is believed to have occurred in Kentucky. I cannot confirm the name of Carrie’s mother or father, their birth or death dates, the indian heritage or any other information. If anyone knows anything relating to this family line, or if someone can confirm if information would still exist (I understand information on the mother may have been burned upon her marrying a white man), please contact me.

Query: My grandfather died even before my mother was born. He was a fireman in Butte Montana and died saving three children from a house fire, so I’m told. His name was Charles CARTER and I was also told that his mother was Cherokee. How can I find out more. I’m thrilled to possibly be a descendant of a Cherokee great-grandmother. I am sorry about the trail of tears and need to know more.

We have not found yet any records of her on the official roles, but know that she was full blooded Cherokee just from family memories. She may have left the tribes with my great grandfather (white man) before the official roles were taken. She would have been born aprox 1869 and married W.A. SEARCY aprox 1886.

Query: I found a July 2003 entry from Kim Caldwell that reads: “I am seeking more info on my Native american Heritage My grandfather is Homer CALDWELL his mother who was Rosie “Babe” HOLYFIELD her mother was a full blooded cherokee His father was Willie B. CALDWELL who was the son of William J CALDWELL and a full Blooded Cherokee woman named GOING SNAKE any info on these families please contact me.” I replied to Kim but the email address is no longer valid. My great (3) grandfather was either James W. or William J. CALDWELL, born in SC about 1780, who was a civilian contractor accompanying the Cherokee movement to OK from GA. William CALDWELL is mentioned in a journal in the Cherokee Nation archives in Tahlequah. He apparently stayed in OK and did not return to GA. Theophilies HOLCOMB, who accompanied William to OK, did return to Talking Rock, GA. If anyone has any information on this CALDWELL line, please contact me.

Query: Looking for any information on a Henry CURTIS birthdate unknown (probably between 1840 to 1850?). Two men on horseback brought Henry to the home of Hiram and Mary Ann PURVIS and wanted to leave him for a little while. These men were to come back and pick him up but never did. Hiram and Mary Ann raised Henry. Years later an old man in Lewis County, Kentucky told Hobart CURTIS, Henry’s grandson, that Henry’s father was a white boy and his mother was an Indian girl and neither family wanted him. Henry was approximately six or seven years old when the men left him at the PURVIS‘ home. When he was grown Henry married the PURVIS‘ daughter, Martha Ann, and they had seven children. Would appreciate any information that anyone has. Thanks.

Query: I’m decended from John E COHRON (1851-1925) of Paulding, Georgia and Cynthia DOBBINS. Family later changed name to CORRON (variations: CORAN, CORON, CORN) and moved to Oklahoma. They were reportedly Cherokee. The interesting thing is they all have clinodactly (crooked baby finger) with no other medical issues. I met a lady with crooked little fingers who said she inherited from her grandfather who was full Cherokee. Does this sound familiar to anyone.
