Query: Hope someone may have known the family of Mae SCRUGGS. Any information about her will be greatly appreciated. She was born sometime around 1910 on the reservation in NC. Her mother’s name was Etta SCRUGGS and she may have a sister called Lizzy. The only information I have on her dad is he may have owned or worked at a store there. She moved to Bessemer City when she married her husband Gibb FLOWERS. I know this is not much information but it’s all I know about her. And it’s sketchy at best. I have tried searching the role but I have no idea what name to look under. I want my daughter, her great granddaughter to know everything she can about her Cherokee heritage and I can’t teach her if I don’t know. Please help.

Query: Greetings… Surname “LIKES” My name is Streven A. DARNER. My father was Edward Robert DARNER. My grandfather was Robert Vincent DARNER (sometimes is listed as Vinson in his middle name). My grandmother’s name was Minnie Mae (May) LIKES. What I want to know is if my Grandparents were from the Cherokee Nation like I’ve always been told. My dad Robert Vincent DARNER passed away before I was born. He passed away in either August 1957 or July 1957 and I wasn’t born until April 1958, so I never could get info from him and to was to young or not old enough to seek the info from my living aunts and uncles before they passed away. I have my dad’s death certificate and it lists on it his mother’s and father’s names and they are Minnie Mae Likes and Robert Vincent DARNER. If more info is needed you can contact me and I can try and find it. Ie; dad’s death certifcate. If this is true then I would be 1/4 Cherokee.

Melody

Query: I am looking for any information on my Great Grandmother who we have been told all my life that she was Cherokee. Her first name was Tennessee, we don’t have a last name and believe she was born about 1860 in Missouri. She married Joel Samuel CLARK, who was born about 1846 in TN, in about 1876. Joel Samuel was a Circuit Rider Preacher in the Piedmont, MO area. They had about a dozen kids, some of the names are: Samuel, Alice, Charley, William, Lizzie, Mamie, Joel Arvel CLARK [my grandfather], Emma, Emel, Lucy, Raymond, etc. The best I have been able to figure this is the proper census records for them. According to the 1880 Census they lived in Union, Iron, MO. According to the 1900 Census they lived in Logan, Reynolds, MO. I appreciate any help as this is a brick wall that I haven’t been able to get over.

Risha Mateos

Query: My paternal grandmother, LOUZELLA SMITH MYERS born July 20, 1907 and died October 23, 1979 was said to be Cherokee. She lived in Pendleton, South Carolina while married to my grandfather, Adolphus P. MYERS. The story within the family is that she was in a vehicle with her Cherokee parents when they were struck by a train. Both parents were killed and my grandmother survived and was adopted from a Cherokee Orphanage. No one in the remaining family knows the name of the orphanage or the exact location. How can I begin my search since all I have is her adopted name and everyone who might have known answers is long dead and I have absolutely no information about her real family?
