John Hedgecoth
Query: Hiram “Jumpin Eagle” Hedgecoth was born April 4, 1812. Hiram died February 05, 1889 at 76 years of age. He married Jane Stone. Jane was born in Cumberland County, Tennesee August 1811. Jane died Janruary 16, 1879 at 67 years of age. His tribe captured Jane and held her captive for several years. At that time she had fallen in love with Hiram. His Indian name was Jumpin Eagle. he took the name Hiram when he and Jane left the tribe and moved back to Cumberland County. That the name Hiram “Jumpin Eagle” Hedgecoth and Jane had the following child: Rachel Hedgecoth. She married Harold Williams. Harold became the father of Lucy Belle “Little Bird” Williams in Tennessee, July 7 1865. Rachel became the mother of Lucy Belle “Little Bird” Williams in Tennessee, July 7 1865. Any info on Jumpin Eagle, Hiram Hedgecoth, Rachel. Jane or Harold Williams would be greatly appreciated. I’m trying to prove N.A. lineage to properly honor my ancestors. Hiram is my gggrandfather. My gggrandmother was Margaret Britt who was listed on the 1850 Bledsoe Co. Tn. Census as the 16 year old daughter of John Britt-age 45 born in S.C. and Tellitha (no maiden name given) age 33 born in N.C. Also listed was Nancy-age 12,A.J.-age 4 and James M.-age 3. Now this is where it gets interesting. In the first census of the newly formed Cumberland Co. Tn. in 1860 there is a John Britt Moyers age 53 listed along with his wife Lilitha and sons A.J., James M., Christopher Columbus and Mary E. By this time Margaret was married to my gggrandfather Headly (Hedley) Turner. Family history has it that Margaret was a Choctaw and her family was in hiding during the removal. The only existing picture that I know of shows a proud woman of noble bearing with no trace of Anglo about her. Was she Choctaw or Melungeon? Why did they change their surname? Any answers or even more questions to investigate would be very helpful.

Query: For dowland@imine.net: Subject: Mahona: Hi to “Dowland” from a linguist called Carl Masthay. Some time ago you left a message asking about the so-called Cherokee name “Mahona”. It happened that I was asking about a misspelling and found your query. Because of the “m” being in the initial position in a word, the name Mahona cannot be Cherokee. It is instead an Irish Gaelic surname probably pronounced /mah-ho-nay/. Here is its etymology: (1) Variant of Mahon, Mahan, Mahone, (a) ‘little Moch’ (/ch/ is like the /ch/ in German Bach ‘brook’), of obscure origin, or (b) son of one with bear-like characteristics; (2) (son of) Mahoney, Mahony ‘grandson of Mathghamhain (pronounced /mahhavun/ or /mahhowin/ or /mahone/, meaning ‘bear’, a euphemistic word to follow a taboo of saying Celtic artos ‘bear’, a fearsome animal. Gaelic math-ghamhain is mat ‘good’ + gamhain ‘calf’, a decidedly benign concept Carl Masthay, St. Louis. Want to comment?

Query: I do not at this time have a genealogy query, though after a conversation with my grandmother, I hope to. I am however looking rigorously for a specific word in the Cherokee lexicon. I have searched numerous online dictionaries, but am unable to find the word in question: simply put, can you help me find the word “music.” As I understand the language, which isn’t very well, phrases compose most speach, therefore any form of “music” would be more than helpful: music, to make music, to love music, music lover. I hope I do not offend by using this medium for an unintended purpose. Any type of response would be appreciated.

My dad was adopted by Nellie’s 2nd husband. Tom & Nellie also had another child who was quite a bit older than my dad and her name was Billye Jeanne’ Beck. She died last month and was in her late 70’s. This couple married September 7, 1874 (and had another daughter, Rosabelle, and a son, name unknown). Edward was son of Jane Arrington, and Mary Frances was daughter to Elizabeth Starkey. A now deceased relative insisted that Nannie Lee’s parents were both full-blooded Cherokee. Trying to confirm this, but hitting many brick walls. No sites so far turn up the names mentioned above, nor Nannie Lee’s married name. (She married Luke English July 9, 1895), nor do I find them on the Guion Miller Roll.
