Query: Elick Snow was a Cherokee born about 1795 (+ or – 5 yrs) in Southeastern Tennessee. He married (or had children by) a Cherokee woman with the surname Rice. Rice was born in Georgia, and she later lived in Northeastern Georgia. Elick and Rice had at least two daughters, one named Martha Rice born abt 1825 in Georgia (who married a white guy named Starling Hopkins) and one named Evalive born abt 1827 in Georgia (who later married a white guy named Andrew Goree). These daughters lived near Jackson, Alabama from roughly 1847 through 1854. It seems that cherokee bands moved around from place to place. Any leads for me? Thanks for your reply.

Query: Re: possible Cherokee spouse of JAMES R. CONDON (middle name is Redmond a/k/a Redman; he may have used Redmond Condon as his name instead. James R. Condon was my GGG maternal grandfather who came to the U.S. in the late 1700s from County Cork,Ireland. I believe he was born in 1754 in IR and immigrated to the US, settling in Ohio around 1774. I believe he married a Cherokee woman known to him as Nancy or “running deer.” I believe that 2 of his Irish brothers also married Indian women. James Redmond Condon died Jan. 8, 1830 at the age of 76 and believed to be buried on an old farm which he owned in Chillicothe Pike, between Chillicohe & Waverly, Ohio. Nancy Condon died on Feb. 22, 1953, at the age of 73 and is buried in the Condon cemetary just north of Omega Ohio. James Redmond Condon and Nancy Condon were the parents of my GG Grandfather, Redmond S. Condon, born 12/4/1811 in Virginia; married to Hannah (Wilgus) (Hughes)sometime around 1840. Hannah Hughes was born 9/18/1820. Gerard Rickett Condon was from Rowan County, KY and Sarah from Fleming County, KY. From this union, my Great Grandfather, Gerard Rickett Condon was born on 4/5/1850 in Ohio. He married Sarah Margaret (born 5/29/1894); she was 16. They both eventually ended up in Vermillion County, IL where my grandfather, Gerard Wesley Condon was born on 7/12/1889. Please help to verify the name of the Indian woman who married my GGG Grandfather, James “R” Condon (possibly using the nickname of “Redman” or “Redmond” Condon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Query: Hi, I am looking for information on my grandmother(Gladys Marie Dixon) last name may not be correct who I was told she was Indian. I was told she was fullblooded. I was also told she may have been adopted as a young child by a family with the last name Dixon or McBride or Dixon could have been her Indian last name. I have no birth record of her. The first time I find her on a census record she is in Coleman,Texas in the home of her adopted grandparents. The census records says she was born in Missouri but I don’t know if this is true or if she was adopted on the families way from Missouri to Texas. If she was adopted she could have been born in Oklahoma or any where alon the trip from Missouri to Texas. Her name that I know her by is Gladys Marie Dixon who married John Irvin Buford. The person who was her mother or adopted mother would have been Johanna McBride or Johanna Dixon. The adoption would have taken place between the years approximatly 1900-1909. The census record shows a Minnie Dixon and a William Edgar Dixon as siblings. But someone said that they did not believe that Minnie and Gladys were real sister’s and that Gladys Marie was fullblood Indian. Thank you for your help.

Query: Hi I’ve grown up knowing that my great-grandmother was Cherokee, but we were never encouraged to ask questions about her background. As kids, Grandma Jaci was the most interesting person we knew and probably the oldest. When we knew her she lived on a farm in Mississippi with animals and some small amount of crops. My parents explained that when Grandma Jaci grew up, being Indian was something you didn’t talk to people about and we never had the chance to ask her questions directly. What I’ve found out over the years is that she and her brothers were half Cherokee, her maiden name was Parkinson and she grew up in Texas. Grandma Jacki had her one and only child when she was fourteen and they grew up together, double dated and lived together on and off throughout their lives. I only knew my (Great)Grandma when she was in her 70’s and she seemed to have Indian features to me. In the pictures when she was young, her and my Grandma Micki were stunningly beautiful and always posing like models. Some other information I’ve picked up over the years: Grandma Jaci had a (wohm pom) belt? Grandma Jaci’s parents were outlaws? We think she was born around 1904, my mom and her brothers and sisters periodically throughout their lives receive a small royalty check from a mining or gas company- not sure why. I’ve always been proud of the fact that this part of my family didn’t emigrate from anywhere- they’ve always been here. I’d really like to find out as much as possible about our Indian heritage. If this information leads to anything more anyone can contribute, I’d love that! If you have any suggestions about how I can go about researching my heritage on my own, I’d appreciate that too. Thank you, One of Jaci’s.
