Query: My family and I are trying to trace our roots back as far as we can possibly get. My name is Melissa TURPIN-LEE and I have a twin brother Michael Anthony TURPIN and a sister one year older Barbara Michelle TURPIN-MADDEN. Our father is Clarence Michael TURPIN who’s father is Clarence Luther Milton TURPIN (married to Betty Jo HOWELLL-and they had 3 boys-Clarence Michael TURPIN, Edward TURPIN and Kenneth TURPIN. Clarence Luther Milton TURPIN. Most everyone called him C.L. – he served in WWII and his father’s name was Guy E. TURPIN. Clarence Luther Milton TURPIN remarried a woman name Dorthey YATES and had 2 more boys-Gary Michael TURPIN and Milton TURPIN . Guy E. TURPIN married Zenobia BOBBITT. Guy E. TURPIN’s parents were Thomas CHILTON and Amanda EDMONDSON. Guy E. TURPIN and Zenobia BOBBOTT were share croppers and they moved around a lot! What we know so far is they came from Mississippi and then to Arkansas – to Blythville, to Hope, to Little Rock AR. Winnie BROOKS and Roy HOWELL are Betty Jo HOWELL’s parents. Somewhere in Oklahoma. Grandma Winnie BROOKS had two brothers Walter BROOKS and he was a school teacher and he taught at University of Arkansas in Green something right before you get to Fayetteville old highway going north. Maybe he was the principal. Her other brother was George BROOKS and his wife’s name was Sara and they lived in NC and he was retired army man. Jimpa (James LIPSMEYER) Betty Jo’s second and long time husband thinks they were all born in Arkansas. Collegeville,AR area comes to mind. We were told by someone that our great great great great grandmother was an indian princess. I have heard we have Mainly Chickasaw and then some Cherokee. We would really like to find out as much as we can. Thank you for taking up your valuable time to help us in any way.

Query: I am serching for information concerning the family of Ely Gates. He was married to Alice Marie Dunham(varoius spellings) She was born to Lula Bell (born !869)and George Dunham. Both Ely and Alice were of Chorkee decent. They had atleast five children. Jonny Gates, Ely Gates , Price Gates, Masilena Gates and Ruby Gates. Price Gates worked for the Baytown Texas police for a while as a motorcycle patrolman. this was in the 1920s. Then he left Texas to go to Mississippi(possibly to Green Carrols) and made his living bootleging. he was last heard of in 1952. Ely may be related to Boots family who are Chrokee also I was told on one occotion by Ruby Gates who was my Grate Aunt that one of our ansestors was raped and scalped at the age of 13 by scalp hunters at a secrate sight in what is now a state park at a wates fall on the Cumberland Platue. Her mother and siblings were murdered but she survived and was taken to Georgia. this happened in 1810. She servived, but was never right againe and no one knew she was pregnant untill she gae birth to a son. Her name was Moonsong. She was of the Wolf Clan, her mother was a woman warrior. I do not know her parents names, I beleive her son was taken in by the Boots family as she died giving birth . He was born in Georgia in May of 1811. He died on the trail after being beaten by millita men. He had a wife and two children. This is all I know of my Chrokee haritiage. I would like to know more, and maybe find lost relitives. One other very important search; and any information would be much appricated. Masaliana Gates married a man named Charles Boots. She had sevral children with him. Henry E. Boots born in 1919 in Warton, Texas on a ranch. His sister Georgie B.Boots born in 1922. also in ElCampo, texas on a ranch. Georgie left her white husband in 1945 and was visiting her grand mother Alice (then married to a man or by then his widow) also Chrokee or mixed blood. His name was Phillip Young. Georgia became involved with an mixed blood Apache man he had been adopted by his white Grand Mother and named Joseph. but his real name was Iornhorse. he was much older that Georgie she was about 24. he was about 45. Her husband forced her to return to him before she an theis man could leave togather . she never saw him again. if anyone knows anything about this man I would really like to hear from you. and learn more about him. I believe he is my birth father. I have no documentation of my mother’s birth and can not prove paternity . therefore no way of eer getting enrolled in either tribe. But I am peoud of my harritage and want to know more about my real familys the native ones at least. I white being concidered white. i obtained my white blood through rape, violence and deciet. it would be a grate comfort to me just to learn about about my familes. I hope some one out there will have some information Wado.

I’m not so sure about her. Back much further back is a DOVE, Lucinda, born abt. 1745 married a PANNELL, William II or Jr., maybe VA or S.C. I have seen on a genealogy tree, Lucinda Dove married to William Pannell, it states that Lucinda Dove was a Cherokee from the DOVE Clan. Query: BENNETT_My grandmother had always told us her great grandmother was part Cherokee Indian, but we have no proof as of yet. My great grandmother was Elizabeth Bennett who married Jesse LaMance Powers b. 1861 died 1941-Whitley County, Ky. Her parents were Benjamin James Bennett, and Rachel Catherine Pennington. We had heard that the Indian blood could have come through the Penningtons, but again no proof. Benjamin James father and mother were Amos born in 1791-TN, and Sarah Elizabeth Hamblin. Rachel Catherine Pennington’s parents were William Pennington born 1783 PA and Susannah Nossman. Amos Bennett’s father was John Bennett born 1796-VA and Rebecca Denee Ross b. 1768-VA. It has been thought these 2 people were where the Cherokee blood may have come through. If anyone has any information on this I would appreciate it.

According to a family registry in an old Bible, she was born April 4, 1818 and was adopted, becoming Sarah Wilson Earley. Tracing down the line to me; Nancy Elizabeth Steele, Dec 15, 1851 -May 19, 1922, married Martin Simeon Young March 8, 1869. They produced 12 children, one of which was Lillie May Young, Jan 24, 1893. Query: I was adopted. Trying to find info on my birthmother. She was born in the summer of 1925 in a mid-western state. BMom was Irish & Cherokee Indian decent. Her mother died when she was 5 and her father died when she was 11. She was raised by her maternal grandmother (somewhere in Ohio). There is the EVANS, EVINS, EVENS, etc surname somewhere in her family line. My adoptive mother told me her name was Edna. My birthmother was discribed in Non-Id Info as having long dark hair, hazel eyes with very long eyelashes and a very good posture. She did not like sports much but did like to read and sew. She was living in Miami, FL in 1945 when I was born. She only had an 8th grade education. Worked as an elevator operator, babysitter, housekeeper, waitress and barmaid. Anyone with info about her? FL records are sealed.

Query: I am searching for Nancy Tipton who was born in Knoxville, TN about 1829. I need more information about who her parents and siblings were. They may have lived in Okalona, TN and she may have had a sister named Jane Tipton but I am certain she was Cherokee. She married William Carroll “Tipton” Gore in TN. They moved to Stone Co., MO. Nancy was a Cherokee Medicine Woman who practiced her herbal medicine and treated the people in the Ozarks where she lived. She is buried at the New Philibert Cem. A great researcher recently found her name was Tipton on the death certificate of her daughter. It’s interesting that her husband’s nickname was also Tipton. Any help with the parents and siblings of Nancy E. Tipton of Knoxville, TN will be greatly appreciated.
