Yes, it appears that a John Love is found on the 1835 Cherokee Census as head of household. But, he is also found on other Trail of Tears records, along with presumed family members.
See:
Trail of Tears List
Office Indian Affairs, July 25, 1835
Report From the Secretary of War. 25th Congress, 3rd Session Senate:
“The claims of Cherokees who may have been dispossessed of their improvements and houses, provided for in the 16th article of the treaty, have been referred to the commissioners, and they will furnish you with a list of such as they may admit.”
So, this illustrates that he was basically being dispossessed of his land and property at that time period.
There is also a “Jane Love” and “Jianey Love (John Love’s old wife)” listed in the same record. However, personal data is not really provided, so we don’t have a firm age range for these individuals. In any event, it appears these families were removed on the Trail of Tears and ended up in Tahlequah District by 1838-9. However, what makes this confusing is that the enumerations 15+ years after Removal only list a “Johnson Love” not a John Love. So, I’d theorize there was an elder John Love that had passed away by the time of the Drennen enumerations, and Johnson and Ezekiel were his sons (and Jane their mother).
In any event, by the time of Henderson and Siler enumerations of eastern Cherokee in the 1850s, there was only one man with the surname Love, and this Robert Love was a halfblood and presumably not related to the John Love family cluster that moved west in 1838-9. His entry was annotated with “Halfbreed, Virginia.” This would probably mean that his father had been a White man from VA.
There are also sources that confirm, and provide specific details, for this Love family’s removal, as follows:
1838 Det# 07 Daniel-Still Ezekiel Love
1838 Det# 07 Daniel-Still Jane Love
1838 Det# -13 Bell-Deas John Love, p843: Threatened by other Indians when it was learned he was given a blanket by Schermerhorn 4/24/37
Based on subsequent records of certain descendants, this Love family was full blood.
Do you have a John Love in your tree that links up with a Shiver, by chance? You might want to simply list the info for the query in standard genealogical format, rather than listed a Cherokee man named “John Love found on Henderson Roll.” That limits the scope of the research dramatically. Basically, all descendants of this man would have Oklahoma roots and they were all enrolled with Cherokee Nation and accepted on the Guion Miller rolls as well.
