January 25, 2016 by kari2happy 1 Comment

Looking for more information on my ancestors. Starting with my 2nd great-grandfather James Nix b. 1858 in Hickman County, TN, died in 1893. His mother Rebecca Brown, whose mother was Cherokee, born Jun 1820, Dickson, Tn. Her mother Nancy Welch, born 1790 in SC, died Sept 19, 1860 in Big Spring Creek, TN. Her parents John Welch, 1753-1809, Cherokee name was Oo Ga Ma/ Od Gum Ah, born in 1753 in Ninety Six, Greenwood, SC. His mother was a Cherokee woman named Vannie Daniel. He lived with the Cherokee much of the time. His father’s name was John Welch, Sr. and also traded with Jim Beamer during the 1750’s. John Married a Cherokee woman named Elizabeth Jane “Betsy” Hembree in 1779. She was also called “Quatsy”. Her mother was Yen Acona, also Cherokee. This was probably her mother’s name as well.

Nancy Welch was my great great grandmother. She was married to Spencer Brown.

Spencer Brown, born in about 1789 near Savannah, Georgia, was the grandson of an Englishman, who had
immigrated in 1732, and an Indian mother. Nancy Welch, born in about 1790 in South Carolina, was the daughter of a German father and an Indian mother.

Spencer and Nancy were married in North Carolina. In about 1814, they migrated by horse pack train, with
their two children (John Riley and Charity), to the Big Spring Creek area of Hickman County, Tennessee. They were among the first white families to settle in this area before the Indian Treaty of 1818..After staking his claim, Spencer road horseback to Knoxville, the capital of Tennessee, to receive his land grant.

Spencer died on October 19, 1868 and Nancy died on September 19, 1860.They are buried in an unmarked
grave in the Brown Cemetery on Blue Hollow Road in Hickman County, Tennessee.

Children of Spencer Brown and Nancy Welch are:
John Brown, b. Abt. 1824, Tennessee,d., Hickman Co., Tn..
    Benjamin Brown, b. 1807.
    James Brown.
    Mary Jane Brown.
    Charity Brown, b. Abt. 1812.
Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Brown, b. August 18, 1816.
    William Brown, b. Abt. 1822.
    Robert Rufus Brown, b. November 16, 1828.
    Wiley Washington Brown, b. September 14, 1829.
    Parsons Montgomery Brown, b. November 14, 1833.
