I am Cherokee; of that there is no doubt. My ancestors, on both my father’s mother and mother’s father lines, were of the Chickamauga.
Here are some of my relatives who are known or believed to have Cherokee blood. Can you help me to trace their descent? I’m sorry that I cannot afford to pay for this research, at least in money. Maybe I can do something else for you instead. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.
1) Myrtle Pomma “Pommie” Vann, – b. 1898 Anderson, Tennessee – d. 1970 Etowah County, Alabama. I can’t figure out who her father was. Seems like this should be one of the easiest lines to trace. Maybe you can make a breakthrough here.
2) Elizabeth Reed – b. 1836 Jefferson City, Tennessee – d. 1898 Duck Springs, Etowah County, AL – married Christopher Columbus West in 1860, Jackson County, AL
* father Joseph Reed – b. 1812 Jefferson City, Tennessee – d. 1900 – Chattooga County, Georgia – m. 8 Feb 1831 Blount County, TN
** father Edward T. Reed – b. 1790 in Tennessee – Tennessee census 1818 in Campbell County, TN – m 28 Feb 1823
** father Allice Clark – b. 1800 in Tennessee
* mother Jane Bishop b. 1815 Jefferson City, Tennessee – d. 1860 Cherokee County, AL
The trail dead ends at her grandfather Edward T. Reed. Can you find out where this goes?
3) Green Berry Guest – b. 8 Nov 1820, Franklin, Georgia – d. 28 Sep 1889, Duck Springs, Etowah County, AL – m. Mary Jane Mabry on 18 Nov 1843 Franklin, Georgia.
I have his father as Samuel Nathaniel Guest, but I’m not sure that’s correct. L.W. Tolton, former principle of Duck Springs Elem. School and amateur historian, said in a paper about the history of this area that the Guest family here are descended from “Sequoyah” (Sogwali), who was known to have passed through the area. Interestingly, at the Duck Springs graveyard next door to the school, G.B. Guest and M.J. Mabry’s grave is the very first one, an elaborate stone arch right next to the entrance.
