My great grandmother:
Nancy Evelyn Oliver
Married name: Nelson
B:Birth
January 9, 1893 • Carbondale (Maybe an Osage?), Kansas
D:Death
June 7, 1945 • Newport, Jackson County, Arkansas, USA
On one census record I have found, she is listed as Nancy “Easy” Oliver.
She had a brother:
Odis Marion Oliver
Birth Date: 17 Apr 1895
Death Date: 8 Jan 1980
Our family called him Od. (Pronounced Aude)
I do recognize a lot of times that these stories are inaccurate or have been exaggerated throughout time. This story was pretty consistent among my dad and his siblings.
The story is, they were half Cherokee and were separated from their family for some reason. They were raised by a white family in Jackson County Arkansas(that family ended up being the family of a lady we know…she told the same story and provided me with pictures of my great grandmother with her family), but were supposed to have been separated from their family in the Eastern Tennessee area, but all birth records that I find say Kansas . I know it sounds cliche, please don’t think that I am, but I have such a strong yearning to know her story, and know my heritage…and feel such a strong drawing to the Native American culture and history. I can’t explain it…I struggle to explain it, even to the rest of my family.
Edited to say: I have read a little about the Cherokee Strip in the Carbondale area around the time she was born and wonder if there may be a connection there?
