Hey, gang.
Hope everyone is well.
My query is concerning my 2nd great-grandfather (the father of my dad’s grandfather).
His name is Watson Spade, enrolled under Dawes # 28564.
His father is Johnson Spade, enrolled under Dawes # 1430. Also enrolled by Drennen # 533 as “Chuh-suh-who-lah” (Indian name). He served as senator from Goingsnake District, Indian Territory 1893-94. He also served as Councilor from Goingsnake District in 1883 and 1889. He believed in Cherokee sovereignty and prosecuted the case against Ezekiel Proctor for the murder of Polly Beck. Legal jurisdiction to try the case was disputed by U.S. Marshals because the husband of Polly Beck, Jim Kesterson, Proctor’s intended victim, was white. The case culminated in the Goingsnake Massacre of 1871.
Johnson Spade lists his 2nd wife as Rachel Spade on his Miller application #135.
Rachel Spade is Miller Applicant #1609 which I cannot find online. As far as I know, she is not the biological mother of Watson.
I have a photograph of Rachel and Johnson Spade’s son, James “Jim” Spade (my grandpa’s “uncle Jim”), with his wife, Jennie Spade (nee Wolfe), and their children.
I cannot figure out who Watson Spade’s mother is. Watson lists his mother’s maiden name as “Little Terrapin.” He lists her Indian name as “Quah-la-you-cah” but says on his application that her English name has been “erased.”
I have seen something on one of those genealogy websites that lists Johnson Spade’s wife as Sally Peacheater but I have no idea who that is or where that person got this information.
Any help in this direction would be enormously appreciated as this has been an awful snarl in my genealogical research since I started, and I just cannot seem to defeat it.
Many thanks.
