I’m looking for information regarding my ancestor, Elinor Margaret Cheek born 1760. On Ancestry.com and Family search websites, it lists that she was born on the Eastern Band Cherokee Reservation, although it is my understanding it is not a Reservation because the Cherokees own the land. I’ve also seen her being born in Cherokee, NC which is part of the Eastern Band Cherokee Nation. She married to William Burgess who was born abt 1760. They had a son William Riley Burgess born 1780. William Burgess Jr., had a son Albert Burgess born in 1819 in Georgia. In my research, I have seen references that they lived on Cherokee land. I know this Burgess family also were friends of the Smith family, who I think also had Cherokee connections. From what I understand, this family left North Carolina and settled in Tennessee. I am hoping to connect with someone who may have more knowledge of this family that can help me with my research. I would love to somehow prove that I have Cherokee ancestors. Thank you for your help.
