Query: We are researching our family’s Cherokke roots. Our older generation has suddenly died out within a short time of each other without leaving many clues. We are trying to piece together a puzzle now with many missing pieces.
We were always told that my great grandmother SARAH JANE TAYLOR (m.MULLINS) born May 20, 1881 in Wise county, VA was full Cherokee. We are not able to find her name on the Eastern band role of 1924 however and are sure she wouldn’t be on the western roles as she never went west but settled in Eastern Tennessee.
We are not so interested in “proving” descendency for tribal membership as just getting to the bottom of the mystery. Does anyone have any other sources or lists that one could look to that an Eastern Cherokee family might have shown up on? We have a couple generations of names back from her as well to work with.

Query: My Great Grand father, WALTER ALLEN MARTIN, June 21, 1882 born in Oklahoma. My Grand father, LESTER ALLEN MARTIN, Feb. 15, 1914 born in Muskogee Oklahoma.
Have been told my whole life I was of Cherokee descent. That our family was part of the Trail of Tears movement and that they had to change their name. The name chosen was MARTIN, after the Martin bird. I am not able to trace any further than my Great Grand Father due to not knowing their Cherokee names. I hope you can help or at least point me in a direction to follow up on. Thank you.

Query: I have a distant Cherokee grand mother named “Georgia Elvia Martin”. (Born estimate 1850’s-1860’s). G.E.M. married John Bloyed while on the Reservation in Oklahoma and later had a child named: “James Franklin Bloyd”, born 20 August 1876. The marriage of G.E.M. and J.B. must have only been a year or three prior to the birth date of J.F.B. in 20, AUg, 1876. Georgia did not die with the Bloyed last name, she later remarried. She is burried in OK somewhere but with a new sir name. What I need to know is the maiden name of Georgia Elvie Martin, or her native american tribal name, which she probably used prior to her marriage to John Bloyed. I would like to then use that info to locate her on the Dawes rolls. Please let me know if there is anything more I can add. DAB.
