Query: My mother’s grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee indian married to a Green of Kentucky (Louisville I believe) who was a land owner (tobacco and thoroughbred horses) and at some point and served in the Kentucky legislature. Since my mother’s mother was adopted the indian heritage must be on her father’s side of the family. I remember my mom telling me her grandmother was a healer and neighbors would come and write from all over to seek her healing gifts. She could heal by just touching a garment sent to her in the mail I’m told. She would never accept money for her services, so many times a basket of corn or other such gifts would be left at her mail box with a note of thanks. As a side note my mother told me the seer Edgar Cayce (died in Virginia Beach in 1947 in his 60’s) was a neighbor at the time living in Kentucky before he moved to Virginia Beach . . . And they were good friends I’m told. I would love to know more about my Great Grandfather and this wonderful healer great-grandmother. Since my father was serving in the military as I was growing up we were not in touch as much as we would have liked. My parents are passed and I am trying to rediscover my early heritage for children and grandchildren.

Query: Can someone help me just get a start trying to trace my family? I really don’t know if family legend has any truth to it or not. Really not looking to gain anything from this just to know where we come from. With a family name like Smith…well trying to do research is problematic at the least. Ancestry.Com gives me 2 different towns of birth and death for my great grandfather…many miles apart but same name and date of birth and death. This would be my fathers family. My mothers would be the Lee side of the family. Just a nudge in the right direction to start looking would be great. I know that is not a lot of info on the family but maybe you can point me in the right directions.

Query: Am seeking family history re: Emma Denton. She was born on the Denton reservation and later married twice to anglo men: our family is from her union with 2nd husband, James York; and she began to declare herself “White” and “born in Indiana” on US Census forms. Family oral history says otherwise, as does skin tone and bone structure and hair texture of her son & grandson. My daughter and I are the end of one genetic line, and this makes me hungry for roots in other lines. I am 1/8 Native American (Cherokee or Cheyenne… there’s some confusion) and my daughter is more than that via her fathers genetic contribution. My own searches have been fruitless… can you help these 2 strays?

Query: Last name: MULLINS. My Grandfather: Bradley Mullins (passed away 30+ years ago when my father was only 9), his wife’s name was Angie and brother’s name is Henry (Wallace). This side of my family moved to Ohio in the late 1900s. Previously, they were from Kentucky and possibly West Virginia. I do not know any ancestor’s names beyond this point. I was told there is Cherokee history in the family but haven’t been able to figure out the lineage or if it is actually even Cherokee. I’ve also heard from someone that the link is a female and it was a different tribe (they couldn’t remember the name to tell me). Irish is (supposedly) the other lineage so maybe an Irish and Native American couple were married at some point. Off hand, that is all the information I have. I’ve tried to use a family tree site to look back further but birth certificates were difficult to read and I had nobody to verify names with.

Query: If my post was too long, i have a Cherokee great-grandmother married to a white man, Altus Swindell, red-haired circuit-riding Methodist preacher in OK. They had Gertrude Swindell, my grandmother who married my grandfather Claud Duvall Early. They had my mother, Edna Fern Early who married my dad William Lester Barton in 1937. My Cherokee woman was in Indian Territory in OK, so presume did the ToT. I had the Methodist church research Altus Swindell, but no luck. Where were marriage records kept back then? Were all the counties formed? My mother was born in Gould Co OK and Gertrude died in Harmon Co in a tornado in 1921 when mother was 4. Thank you for any help.
