Query: I am researching my Cherokee roots. My mathernal grandfather was said to be half Cherokee, and I have his birth cerificate which states his mother’s name was Francis (Frankie) CLIFTON and the birth certificate gives his mothers place of birTh as the Cherokee Nation, OK. However when I try to research here on the internet it say she was born in tx on several of the family trees I have found as well as she stated that on the census. I think it was not a popular thing back then to be indian so I am guessing she lied, but the birth certificate of her son says Cherokee nation. Her father’s name was Franklin Levi CLIFTON and her moms name was Delilah Jane COULTER CLIFTON. Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Query: Hi! I was wondering where I can find information on my Cherokee roots, or if this is the place. I don’t have as much information as I would like, but it’s worth a shot. My great grandfather was a Cherokee Indian, born on a reservation. When he was around 2 or 3, he was forced off the reservation and into adoption into a white family. I don’t even know what his name was before adoption, but the white family changed his name to Jack WOOD. Would there even be records of the name change and who his mother was and where he was from? I am assuming his birth year was around 1915-1920, but that isn’t even exact. Any info or tips would be great.

Query: I am attempting to secure information about my family (Charlie & Mary Magadalan BARETT TURNER) who came out of North Car in the 1800’s following the path of the Trail of Tears. My great-Grandfather was part Cherokee but my Great Grand-mother was full blooded. Great-grandfather was commonly named Poppa. My grandmother told us story how Poppa did not want them to speak or write Cherokee language out of fear. The majority of the family ended up in Wabesska, Arkansas. Than the rest of the family journeyed to the Oklahoma Terrority of Vian, Oklahoma. My great-Grand-parents had nine children (Frances, Nate, Sidney, William, Naomi, Perkins, Gilert, Leola, and Weachta). The family was ery reglious and was alway involved with the church. Have a picture of them both and would be more than happy to show.

Simmons/Adams/Martindale
Query: I am researching 2 ggggrandmothers who my family has always believed to be Cherokee. Sara SIMMONS, who’s maiden name was supposidly Adams married Lee Grant SIMMONS in 1875 according to census, though there is no other proof. After 1880 they moved to Indian Territory in Oklahoma; present day Muse, LeFlore county. I’ve scoured through state and county land records endlessly without finding proof that either of them owned land, even though numerous censuses said them to be land owners, which leads me to think she may have been Choctaw due to living on the reservation. I am only able to find record of her after she was married, and can’t seem to find any evidence that her maiden name was truly ADAMS. Census states thay she was born in AR 3 times, and TN once. The same of her parents. There is no mention of brothers, sisters, or parents anywhere that I’ve been able to find. There were a few ADAMS families that I have researchef in AR, but have not been able to link any ties to them in any way. I feel like I have exhausted my research to a dead end. I do know that we have pictures of Sara, and her mother, that show undeniably strong Native American features. Now, on to Irine MARTINDALE. She is an even smaller needle in the hay stack. She was married to John MARTINDALE sometime befor the 1900 census. I have found one census record in 1900 stating that she was born in Indian Territory, OK, and that both of her parents were born in AL, and TN. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Ada, OK. She died sometime between 1900 and 1910. As with Sara, I can find no birth certificate, no obituary, and not even a slight clue as to her last name. My grandmother is dead set on Irine having been full blood Cherokee. Whether either of them were actually of any indian descent or not, which I honestly believe they were, I would be grateful to have the information to work on finishing up our family tree. If anything should ring a bell, or you feel that you might have a connection, feel free to let me know. I would like to get all of this done before my grandmother passes, and im running out places to look.
