Query: My maternal grandmother’s surname is Willie Mae HALL (now deceased), was born on or around August 5 1916 in Camden County, SC to Henry and Hannah HALL. We know that they were Full Native American Indians but we are not sure if they were Cherokee, Creek or Catawba Indians. My grandmother did not know any of her heritage because her mother died when she was 2 years old and per my mother, my grandmother was the youngest of 29 children as her father had two wives (not sure if that is true). I am not able to find any information on any of my family in South Carolina. Please help, I am at my wits end.

Query: I have been told that my great-great grandmother Minnie Dawson is Cherokee. I show her birth date at May 1 1887 in St. George, Tucker WV. Her birth parents are listed as Hannah Jane Helmick and Abraham Dawson. We have told that Minnie was given to the Dawson’s to raise her and that her Native American Indians left WV to travel out west. When you see pictures of her and her three sisters, there is a distinct differnce. The three sisters are taller, stockier and fair complected. Minnie was under five feet tall, long black hair and high cheek bones. Have been told many of the Cherokee Indians leaving that area of WV gave their younger children to the white families thinking they would stand a better chance of living rather than going out west. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My mom Jessie was half Cherokee, but I can’t make the connection through genealogy to the Cherokee people. My Gran-Dad died at a young age when my Mom was about 10 yrs. old I think this is causing the connection problems.
