Clan

December 11, 2020 by Rocketmom1212 1 Comment

Hi, I am raising my 9 year old grandson who is part Cherokee, I try to learn as much as possible to teach him about his heritage since none of his fathers family is in contact with him. I am trying to understand the clan system and since his mom is white find out if he has a clan or will never have one or how that works. Please Help

I’m not sure if you have received an answer to this question or not but the clan system is matrilineal, it passes through the mother, therefore a male would trace his clan through the closest female. In this case you would need to find out if your grandson’s father’s mother (so his paternal grandmother) has a clan. If so, that would be his clan in this case. It is not however uncommon for clan information to be lost to time. He can still be Cherokee and not be sure of his clan.
