Conflicting Cherokee Heritage Evidence!

December 7, 2017 by hippienutbread 1 Comment

Hi! Family tradition and a regional history book claim that one of our female ancestors was half Cherokee and half Irish. However, Ancestry.com doesn’t have information on her and a 23andme report actually showed no Native American blood in my grandmother. So, I’m trying to find out if the history book is wrong or if my ancestor fathered a child from another woman, then raised him.

The ancestors in question are:
Elizabeth Briggs (b. 1803 in Rowan County, North Carolina; d.1879 or 1883 Blue Ridge, Collin, Texas); this is the supposed half Irish half Cherokee ancestor.
Her husband, George Washington Smith (b. July 1,1795, Sumner, Tennessee; d. July 1, 1876, Blue Ridge, Collin, Texas).
Elizabeth Briggs’ mother, who by record is full Cherokee, Nancy Hales (b. 1774 Craven, North Carolina; d. 1840 Jackson, Alabama).

I want to find out of Nancy Hales is Cherokee or not. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much,
Olivia

I am very interested in finding out all I can about my Cherokee heritage. My dad told us some, but he passed when I was twelve. i was told that my great-grandmother was born near Seneca Rock, WV and later moved to Harrisonburg, Va.
