I am trying to find my Grandmother’s Father. My Grandmother was born in 1936 and her Mother was Catherine Roy (from Scotland) and her Father’s last name was Cummings and he was full-blooded Cherokee. Apparently they never married. My Grandmother was later adopted by her Mother’s new husband. They lived somewhere around St. Louis, Missouri. This is all I have to go on, she doesn’t like to talk about it.

I found him, his name was James Owen Cummines, born 11/22/1915 died 10/23/1965. He was born in Kentucky, lived in St. Louis, MO and married Catherine Louise Roy and they had a child named Joan R Cummines. They later divorced and he moved to Chicago, IL. Lost track after that. Now, I am looking for his Parents. If you have any information, I would greatly appreciate it.

I found him!!! His name was James Owen Cummines and he was born & raised in Ballard County, Kentucky. On 1930, 1920 Census, his name is spelled Cummins. YEAH! Now I just wonder if his family was indeed Cherokee, because his whole family is listed as white. Now, I need help with that part.

Nope, he certainly wasn’t a full blood Cherokee. He was a White guy. There is no apparent Cherokee ancestry anywhere in his tree (which goes back pretty far on most lines).
His parents were Elbert Cummines (1891–1964) and Annie Hogan (1896–1970)
Kentucky Birth Certificate

Elbert was the son of Caleb Alberto Cummines (1860–1935) and Nora Blanks (1872–1905). They can be found here:

Caleb’s parents are also linked there. So, you can back even further. Nora’s grave isn’t linked, but she was the daughter of John Blanks (1842–1900) and Margaret Ellen Blanks (1848–UNK). John was a Civil War vet (Conf.) that came from Virginia originally. He served with Company E, 14th Regiment, Pickett’s division, Armstead’s Brigade (Virginia). After the war he moved to Trigg County, KY where he married Margaret. Then they moved to Ballard County, KY.
Annie was the daughter of George Boyd Washington Hogan (1858–1942) and Mary Ella Owens (1865–1935). George was the son of James Wesley Hogan (b. 1818) and Caroline Weakley (b. 1827). These are old lineages that are well traced in this book – just do keyword searches for these names:
