I have been trying to figure out if a certain person in my family is Cherokee or Catawba Indian since those where the main two tribes in/around the area. The only information I have about her is Key/Kee or Kay Cherokee woman who had 3 children with Thomas Correll. I can not locate proof of Marriage or copies of birth certificates/death certificates. Therefore I do not know who she was or if she even was an Indian. Thomas was born in 1787 in North Carolina to John Correll and wife Mary Townsend. This Kay lady is supposedly born in or around 1795 in North Carolina, parents unknown. Some sites believe she was Nancy Ward but I can not find proof of this. The 3 children are William, Margaret and Hiram Correll born between 1820-1825. All 3 would have been born in NC around the Iredell area. They may have lived in TN for a while.

I have the same problem, but with a Joseph Correll. John Correll and Mary Townsend didn’t have any son with the name Thomas, just David, Samuel and John. Joseph Correll was Samuel’s son. Joseph married a Mary Ann Hess, and I believe that she was either Catawba or Cherokee. Maybe another one of Samuel or John jr’s sons had married an Indian. John had a son named Hiram, and he had a son named Thomas. I think Hiram’s wife was a Rebecca Newlin. For years I have been trying to find the native american ancestor on my dad’s side. My dad’s great grandmother was a Nancy Correll, and she was born in Tennessee in the 1820s and her parents were born in either Rowan or Iredell county. My dad’s cousins are dark complected and look like Cherokee. I’m thinking that my great-great grandmother was one quarter, or she had a different mother, and could be half. John Correll, Jr., and Samuel moved to Indiana/Illinois border in 1830s, to Sullivan co., In and Crawford Co., Illinois.
