I was one of many, clearly, who grew up with the story of having native american ancestry. My dad was adopted, and we found his bio father (my grandfather) who confirmed the story: They had 3 children, Francis Wayne Arthur (my dad, who, when adopted, became William Wayne Marshall). The girl was named Charlotte, and she was also adopted out. And the youngest, a boy, stayed with the family. According to the bio dad (I believe he was Francis as well, known as Frank), the older two children were adopted out because their mother kept “running back to the reservation”.
I heard this directly from him. I have my dad’s birth certificate and this mystery native-american grandmother has a name: Edith Puckett, born in Georgia.
My dad was born in 1941, so likely Edith was born around 20 years earlier? If any of this looks or sounds familiar, I’d love to hear from you!
