I had always been told that our family had native american ancestors so it was not a shock when I started working on my genealogy that I came across my 6th Great Grandmother -Catherine “Rising Fawn” Moytoy. She married William Presley Self in 1751 and had my 5th Great Grandfather, Issac Self in 1759. I found the first US Census in 1790 and Issac Self is listed as a Free White Man – I find this strange since, from what I can find – Catherine’s father was Cheif Kanagatoga Old Hop Standing Turkey Moytoy and her mother was Go-sa-du-isga Kituwah Ani-ga Tage Wild Potato Clan. I am curious to see if anyone has more information on any one I have mentioned? I can not find Catherine on any Indian Rolls and the first census only names men. Thank you in advance!

Hi there,
I found the same information, looks like my 3rd great grandfather Francis Job Self and your 5th great grandfather Issac were brothers 😉
I don’t know any more.
It’s strange because my mother grew up being told her Mother’s grandmother was full blood Cherokee, I did my mother’s DNA on Ancestry and she came back no NA found 🙁
The Self family is on her father’s side. Appears my grandfather’s great grandmother was a self and it went from there, but again was not ever told this part but now we have the internet and can find more things, but never knew this. I’ve sent my dna to Gedmatch and found I have like 3% NA, but it’s strange because my mother’s shows more diluted than I do, and maybe we do have some through my father but I have not been able to find any links so far.
Anyway, wanted to say hello and sounds like we are distant cousins and well if you find anything else out, let me know, there is speculation about “Rising Fawn” apparently there is confusion between two women, I’ve done a Google search for her name and some folks say that this is not the same woman and the one who married William Presley Self was not NA; however, I have read other articles which say she was and links to the Chief as you describe above. And well maybe when she was alive it was before the registry was even there.

I also find 2 Rising Fawn Moytoy. One was born in 1740 in Virginia. The other was born in the Cherokee nation in Alabama. Because NA gave different names to the white or Indian males it is hard to tell if either one of these were my 4x gr grandmother.. I did Ancestry dna and it did not show a % of NA. The only information I have is from Ancestry on my father’s side. Peoples-People’s -Peeples-Peeples-m) Malinda Self-(f)John Self-William Self-(m) Rising Fawn Moytoy. I am on Ancestry DNA so if you want to join and link records I am,

William Presley Self to Catherine Rising Fawn Moytoy. Are my 4th great-grandparents also. My ancestors were mostly from Virginia. The Self line married into the Shifflett, Lamb and Samuels. Most lived and are buried in what is now the Upper Pocacan Mt in the Shenandoah National Park. Melisssa Lamb married my g-grandfather Mesheck Samuels. They are buried in the Park. There was a picture at one time maybe 50 years ago that showed Melissa the gg-granddaughter of Catherine Riding Fawn Moytoy Self in a war bonnet passed down to her. The picture has been lost. I do have a picture of Melissa and she looks very much Indian. He mother was Catherine Shifflett named after Catherine Rising Fawn Self. Would appreciate any information on this Moytoy/ Self line especially in Virginia.
The Moytoy line is Cherokee and the Self line is Shawnee.
