My mother’s family has a proud verbal history of having Cherokee heritage. However, cannot find any hard data on Ancestry.com and of course, most people with direct knowledge have passed. Was always told that a Cherokee child was found on the side of the road near Birmingham, AL. She was approximately 3 years old and said her name was Shumake. She was taken in by the family and adopted. The thought is that she is my generations great-grandmother, but nothing on Ancestry confirms this. Every person I find is listed as ‘white’. This is very, very sketchy information, but does it jive with anyone else’s history?
