Minnie L. Goff was born about 1884, most likely in GA (two out of three extant Census enumerations give a GA listing). She married Archie Ball Cheek in 1903. By 1910, this couple had made their way to Montgomery, Alabama. She died in 1933. The couple is found on the 1920 Census, listed as laborers in a cotton mill. Her parents’ places of birth are given as GA and SC, By 1930, Minnie is listed as an “inmate” at the Montgomery Tuberculosis Hospital. Again, her parents places of birth are given as SC and GA in that particular enumeration.
Unfortunately, her parents were listed on her death certificate as father “M. L. Goff,” of TN and “DK” (don’t know) mother. So, not much info to go on.
She was found on the 1900 Census at age 16, living as a single “Boarder” in the Barrow household, in Summerville, GA. She’s hard to trace because she wasn’t living with her own family at such a young age, and perhaps had a domestic or employment arrangement or was in some kind of foster situation (or a combination of both, per the times).
The 1890 Census was mostly destroyed and it leaves a huge gap in the records. She will likely be extremely hard to trace. Unfortunately, the father’s name is not fully listed, just given as initials which is hard to verify, particularly if she can’t be found living with him in the 1900 enumeration, and she was born after the 1880s Census.
Another bit of info that can be gleaned from a few census enumerations is that she was literate. It might also be safe to posit that Minnie and Archie met in GA, and were married there since they were both in that state in the late 1800s-1900, living in Richmond County..
