I am searching to see if anyone here has connection to Powhatan Porter Jackson. He was my 3rd great-grandfather and Cherokee. He is as far back as I can go and would love more information about him and to seek the truth on how we really received the Jackson name. He was said to be born in Virginia and is buried in the Jackson cemetery in Perry Co Kentucky.

I don’t think Powhatan Jackson was Cherokee at all. He was born in Henry County, VA, and is found living in Washington, Virginia by 1840 listed as “Free Person of Color” on that enumeration. There were never any historical Cherokee communities in Virginia, and especially in eastern part of the state, they would just not be found in that location. What is more likely is that they have some connection to the tribes in eastern Virginia. You may want to look at the Powhatan connection. His wife was Mary Beaty, also known as being of mixed-Indian ancestry. This might be some clue:

Modern descendants have been included in a Y-DNA study and he seems to link to the John Jackson lineage:

Hi Anja,
I too am looking for connections to Powhatan Porter Jackson. My late father was adopted, and with the help of a very nice person I have been trying to track down his birth parents as I would like to know more about his side of the family and maybe making new connections as well.
Let me know if you would like to compare notes if you have any more information. If you have Facebook I am on the group called DNA Detectives, and they’ve been super helpful in getting people information on what they need to find their family. Hope to hear from you!
