Richard was my ggggrandfather. I believe that Jonathan and William were at least relatives, but have been attempting to determine this for some time. They were in Lincoln County, Tn (present day) on the Marshall County line on Richland Creek between 1806 and 1812. William fought in the War of 1812 and the Creek Wars as part of the Lincoln County Militia. I believe that likely he was William Welch who married Elizabeth “Betsy” Hembree daughter of Old John Hembree around 1799 and moved first into Kentucky with other Welch family members and then on into Hardin County where he died. They are buried there. Her first husband was thought to be John Welch. See research online of Larry Petrisky (Welch and Hembree).
As best I can determine, there were two Welch Families in the area at the time and most descend from John Welch of Tryon County, NC who died in 1769. Verified sons are Major Nicholas William Welch of Ramsaur’s Mill during the Revolutionary War (Tory) who fought with James Pearis (Tory) and father of several Cherokee children, Thomas Welch (his half brother) and as best I can determine a Patriot, and a brother, John.
I can document Hembrees in the area during this period. Just trying to unravel it all as Hembrees and Welches intermarried in the Carolinas. This is where James Welch, Packhorseman comes in. His descendants are intermarried and in the area at the same time. All of these families had children with the same names.
